Introduces students to the formal elements of filmmaking,
with a focus on filmmakers who challenge conventions of
Hollywood cinema.
FILM AND NEW DIGITAL MEDIA
Considers the impact of digital technology on film art while
introducing students to digital production techniques.
NEW EAST ASIAN CINEMA
Focuses on recent cinema from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan,
South Korea & Japan, with an emphasis on the influence
of Eastern filmmakers on Western films, and vice versa.
THEORIES OF THE MOVING IMAGE
Considers major movements in film theory from the early
1900s to the present—from early meditations on medium
specificity, to auteur theory, to ideological critiques, to new
media theory.
REPRESENTING REALITY?:
THE SHIFTING CLAIMS OF DOCUMENTARY FILM
A survey of the major movements and debates within
documentary history, from the early Lumière shorts, to
cinema verité, to the essay-film, with a focus
on shifting conceptions of “reality.”
THE ESSAY-FILM
Introduces students to the genre of the essay-film and
guides them in the creation of their own personal films.
